History of France in English's Podcast : History of France in English Episode 21, Special Episode 2 - the History of French Cuisine

The History of France in English is a weekly podcast. Oddly enough, it's about the history of France and in the English language. Every week there is a larger piece on the history of France and a shorter, cocktail party slapdown that offers a bit of history that runs counter to the usual stereotyping of character the world attributes to this great country.

  • Just listened to the French cuisine episodes (now I'm hungry, especially for bread and other baked goods) and it reminded me of a thought I had years ago vis-a-vis French culture in general. In my youth, I often wondered what it was about French culture that made it unique, or at least stand out from the European crowd. And then one day it dawned on meif you look at a map of Europe it becomes obviousFrance IS the crossroads of Europe. For centuries, they were in the enviable position to test all sorts of cultural influences be they culinary, political, educational, social et cetera. Taste, experiment, mix, season and taste again. Take ownership of what works and discard the rest. They could take the best elements from north, south, east and west, inland or coastal and recombine them into something 'French'. Just my two bits worth.
